Wednesday Words and Hodgepodge

Here it is Wednesday again.  Busy week, getting that quilt together, after suffering quilter’s block (more on that later).  If you want to read more Hodgepodge, follow the link on my sidebar.

1. What's something you're dealing with that might be described as tricky?

Tricky, huh?  Well, a quilt pattern that I’ve designed, and want to get done up to show you all – it’ll get there someday, making progress regularly.

2. What's your treat of choice?

Chocolate, always chocolate – in any form, in any amount!

3. Did you/will you carve a jack-o-lantern this month? Which real (living or dead) or fictional 'Jack' would you most like to meet in person? Why?

No pumpkin carving in this house any more.  As for a ‘Jack’ that I’d like to meet – how about Jack Klugman, always loved his acting.

4. In your opinion, what's the grossest sounding word in the English language?

‘Cackle’ comes to mind – just think of those witches hovering over those cauldrons, with who-knows-what in them!!  LOL!

5. When did your heart last skip a beat?

Happens every time my husband kisses me ‘that way’ .  Actually makes my heart skip just thinking about it!

6.  Monster Mash by Bobby 'Boris' Pickett, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon or Ray Parker Jr.'s Ghostbusters...your favorite 'scary' tune?

Don’t pay a lot of attention to ‘tunes’, but what comes to mind is The Twilight Zone – noo noo noo noo.  Oh, man, now it’s going to be in my head all day!

Was all ready to show you the quilt top, sans borders, but when I looked at the picture, I saw a glaring mistake that I just can’t live with.  So today will be a frogging day – then when it’s back together correctly, and I have the borders on, I’ll show you.

Have I said before how much I like fall colors?!?  Years ago, there was a Colors movement in fashion, and people held home parties just to discover what color-way suited them best.  Well, I’m a ‘fall’ person, but then just look at the color choices in my wardrobe, and one needs no checking of the wrist, draping of the scarves, or testing of the cosmetics to know that (about me at least).  Apparently, though, black is a color (or non-color) that I should never wear, but sometimes, there’s nothing for it but that ‘little black dress’.

Monday’s ‘Musement

?Where do you want me to go?

Can you just imagine asking directions and being told ‘drive down That St, make a left at This St until you come to The Other St and turn left again.  It’ll bring you right back to That St.  Oh, but if you’re wanting to go to the post office, you won’t find it on Post Office Rd, it’s over on Keizer St.’

How cool is that?  Why bother thinking up names for streets!  This would work, wouldn’t it!

This is apparently a map of a little town in NS called Porter’s Lake.  We’ve never been there, but now I want to go, just to see for myself!  We have been to NS, twice, and thoroughly enjoyed the people and their culture, their ‘accent’, their sense of humor.  And I’m sure it was a hilarious day in council when they decided on the names of these streets!

When we were in Washington state one time, camping, we were doing some exploring around Port Townsend and came across Egg and I Rd.  I knew immediately this was the area where Betty MacDonald and her first husband had farmed in the late 1920’s.  Her books were so very popular for many, many years and eventually spawned the Ma and Pa Kettle movies.

What is the most unique road name, or town name that you’ve come across in your travels?  I’ll be sure to share your replies in another post.

Wednesday’s Words and Hodgepodge

I’m baaaccckkk!   Yes, missed the last couple of weeks as we were away for vacation, but ready to dive in and share a little more of myself.  I’ll be linked to Hodgepodge, click on the icon on my right side-bar if you want to read more of what people have to say.

 

1. Times Square is the setting for the infamous ball drop signaling a brand new year....when did you last 'drop the ball' on something?

Just this past summer.  After the floods in southern Alberta, there was a drive to collect quilts for the evacuated families.  I meant, I really did, to ‘whip’ one or two up, but somehow it just didn’t happen.  But I do have an extra quilt top here, will find another charity and send it along.

2. What is one thing you resolved to do in 2013 that you actually did?

I joined an on-line group challenging quilters to ‘Get ‘Em Done or Use It Up’ (finish those UFO’s and/or use up stash).  I did great finishing up the UFOs, mostly because there weren’t a lot.

3. Jack London is quoted as saying, "You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club." Agree or disagree? Why? 

Sometimes I agree and sometimes not.  At times I just am inspired, no idea where the thoughts come from, but just know what I want to do.  Other times, I need books and quilt shows and internet searches to find my inspiration.

4. What was the best thing you ate in 2013?

Not being a foodie, I don’t pay that much attention to what I’m eating, beyond the few minutes while I’m eating it.  But I do have to say the brined, smoked turkey for Christmas dinner was fabulous!  Probably even better because I didn’t have anything to do with the cooking of it!

5.  Share an anti-resolution...that is, something you plan to keep on doing in the new year.

Love the best I can, share the most I can, laugh as often as I can.

6. The Pantone color of the year for 2014 is radiant orchid.  Like or no like? Would I find this color anywhere in your home or wardrobe? Will you add something in this shade to either?

I like it, it’s soft and yet vibrant.  But there’s none of it in my home or wardrobe, because I tend toward using more fall-type colors.  But maybe I should think about adding it to my wardrobe, it might look good with my silver hair LOL!

It truly has been a wonderful year.  We’ve had lots of family times, lots of food, lots of reminiscing.  We welcomed two new family members, and celebrated our love and joy with and in each other.  Looking forward to more of the same in the coming year.

A Camp Cook

When we’re at home, Grizz does almost all of the cooking.  It’s a hobby for him, and he’s a much better cook than I am.  And it frees me up to do the things I like to do like – quilt, of course!

But on the road, I do more of the cooking, not sure why, but that just seems to be the way it works out.  This week, I was reading a novel, and a character was looking for something to make for lunch and put together things that he found in his fridge.  But it sounded so yummy I just had to try it.  And – for those of you that know me well and know that I’m generally tied to following a recipe – I even made a few adjustments, based on what was in our fridge.

I started with sauté-ing some mushrooms and set them aside

Then on to frying up some onions and peppers

Add a few bits of left over bacon

In the meantime, I whipped some eggs with cream cheese, added salt and pepper, and into the pan they went along with the mushrooms and some olives and cook it all up

Plate it with some cold pea salad, and a slice of bread

And voila – a simple camping style meal.  Albeit on the stove in our RV and not on a campfire the way real campers would do, but it WAS delicious!

It’s Been Quite a Week

We’ve been home for a little over a week now, and it’s just flown by!

We started and ended the week helping our DS-K clean up his new home.   What a job!  But it’s clean enough now that he can actually live there, but the cleaning and renos and redecorating will be continuing.  Here’s a picture of behind the fridge before we cleaned it:

K’s mother-in-law actually took charge of the kitchen, and it looks fabulous now!

DDIL-M is away at school,so she is missing out on all the FUN!

So, at the end of the week – carpets are all out, ceilings are almost all painted, floors are vacuumed and washed, kitchen and bathrooms are clean, drains are almost all running freely, lawn is mowed, garbage has been removed, several windows are clean so that we can actually see through them, the small bedroom that K will use temporarily has been painted.  Lots and lots more to do yet – painting will continue, the furnace and water heater will be replaced this week, some windows need to be replaced this week.  But K actually slept in the house for the first time last night!  Welcome home bud!

During the week, Grizz and I tackled a few jobs around the house that were waiting for us – picked and juiced our grapes (sorry, forgot to take a picture), washed the living and dining room drapes (oops, that exposed our windows that are ready for another cleaning), and got started on painting the trim on the outside of the house.

Friday was a day off – and we took full advantage.  We headed out to watch some of our friends and neighbors compete in the BC Senior Games Floor Curling competition:

They came home with a gold medal!  And another friend competed in the bike racing competitions and came home with a gold and a bronze medal.  Not bad for folks in their 70’s and 80’s!

Friday evening we went to the local Fall Fair.  The Midway held its usual fascination for the young and the young-at-heart:

There was outdoor stage entertainment by a home-grown singer (not our style, so we didn’t stay long)

We learned that the first night of the fair, there are no animals in the barns yet (will make sure to go on Saturday next year).  But the arts and crafts and horticultural displays were all ready:

For the first time ever, I entered a craft project in the fair, the cross-stitch of Kilby Farm (local historic site) that took me several years to complete.  As you can see it got a second place:

Getting a Jump Start

Now that we’re home for a little bit, I’m determined to get some sewing done.  After finishing the diaper bag, I got out the fabrics for a baby quilt.

Monday’s ‘Musement

Do you sing in the shower?  I do – and never once worried about this:

I’d worry more about the broken hip from the slip than about the paramedics.  They’ve already seen it all, so there are no surprises in store for them if they do have to come and help you out (pun intended).  If you have room to dance in your shower, I say go for it!  Enjoy, sing, shout, gyrate, dance – it’s your shower and nobody’s watching……but put down a non-slip mat just in case!!!

Or do you like to sing in the car?  Years ago somebody said to me that she would never sing in the car in case somebody thought she was talking to herself.  Does that really matter?  I sing in the car lots, whether by myself or with others, when those catchy tunes come on the radio.  And lots of times, I’m bobbing my head, shaking my shoulders, swaying back and forth – if I could I’d get up and dance.  But then Mr. Policeman might object.  Let’s all just sing when we feel like it, but keep those hands on the wheels and eyes on the road!

 

Actually we’re doing some happy dances around our house these days.  The news is out – we’re expecting a grandchild!   So much joy!  So much excitement!  So much anticipation! 

There’s a little reservation along with it all, because last year our twin grand-daughters were born way too early and only lived a short time, and since then there have been two other miscarriages amongst our children.  But now, we’re past the danger stage for miscarriage, doctors are very involved in doing everything they can to ensure health and safety of mom and baby (not that they weren’t before but things happen), and the ultrasounds show a very healthy, active ‘lil bud’.

So I’m singing in the shower and in the car – practicing nursery songs and lullabies.

Is It Here–Is It Really Here??

 

It’s a few days yet before the actual first day of spring, but we’re certainly starting to see the signs.

There’s some green on trees, there’s an occasional crocus, and Mr. Robin came to visit a few days ago:

We’ve even seen a small bird in our bird bath (but too slow getting the camera out).  And nearby a pair of eagles are back in their nest, but the nest is in a place where we can only see it as we cross a bridge, so no place to stop for a picture.

I know I’ve been very remiss in keeping you all up to date with life and times round and about.  Sorry about that, but not actually accomplishing much of anything.  I spend all my time day-dreaming about the grandchildren that we’re going to greet in the not-too-distant future.

#1 is due in late May, but we expect to see her almost anytime now.  DD has been on restricted activity for the last couple of months, and the wee one every so often threatens to join us.  I spent most of February in Calgary with them, all is much more stable now, and actually she’s safe to be born, but we’d all like her to do a little more growing first.

#2 is due in October to DS1 and his lovely wife, who is experiencing the worst of the morning sickness (all day!!) right now.  Because of a couple of previous losses, an early US was done and all indications are good.  They’ll be under obstetrician care, which makes us all happy!

So, you’d think I’d be quilting and sewing up a storm, but I’m not!  Lots of plans, but for some reason I just can’t get motivated.  So this is what’s sitting around my sewing space:

DD’s MIL has just returned from Calgary, and brought over the fabrics they were able to choose for the baby room, and we have some dates now set aside to sew crib sheets, change table covers, pillow cover, sleeping cozies.  All good practice for the same kind of sewing that I’ll do for baby #2.  But this will all wait a couple of weeks.

First, we’re headed to Alberta for a week to visit the kids, and take a few things to them (after I get down to the basement and dig through some boxes – UGH!).

Then shortly after we get home, Grizz is scheduled to have his second total knee replacement surgery.  All the prep work has been done, so he’s good to go.

Back in January, I joined Thea at California Dreamin’ in a pledge to start a new quilt each month, and I personally pledged to finish one each month (not necessarily the one that was started).  Well…..that hasn’t happened.  But once we’re home from this trip, I’ll start fresh with the pledge and get going.  I’m sure once I get started, I’ll be hooked again, and unable to resist the call of the sewing machine!  Maybe I’ve been waiting for spring!

Happy that spring is almost here, happy to being almost a Nan, happy to know the little ones and their mothers are getting such good care, happy to be able to get out and see them all.
