Product Description
Aleksandr Nikitenko, born into Russian serfdom in 1804, almost miraculously gained his freedom as a young man, 37 years before serfdom was abolished in the Russian Empire. His compelling autobiography - here translated into English - is one of the very few ever written by a former serf. Nikitenko describes the tragedy, despair, unpredictability, and astounding luck of his youth, bringing to life the experience of a serf in 19th-century Russia.

Monday’s ‘Musement

If you're here from the Grow Your Blog Party, you'll find that post and give-away here

You’ve all probably heard the ‘lullaby’ Soft Kitty – for sure if you ever watch The Big Bang Theory on TV, you’ve heard it.  A little ditty to sing to sooth children, especially (apparently) if they are under the weather.

Well, here’s a little ‘lullaby’ for quilters:

It is amazing how soothing it feels to get that new fabric, to touch it, stroke it, hold it in your arms and dream about what it will become.  So when you’re feeling under the weather, sing this little ditty as you wander through the fabric store – or the yarn store, or the scrapbooking store or whatever other store supplies you with the goodies to ply your craft.  Go on, I dare you!   And now I dare you to get the tune out of your head for the next three days!!
Happy shopping!               Blessings, Peg

Hello Again

Whew!  It’s been some time since I posted, and a lot has been going on around here.

A few changes around the house (to accommodate an extra small freezer), will end with a change in my sewing space.

To start, a 'lid’ over this trunk, covered to convert it to a pressing board.  Grizz is in the process of making a storage base for it that will do the double duty of storing some quilting supplies and raise the pressing board to a usable level.

110

We’re just back from a week-long trip to Alberta, arranged because little LV’s parents planned a celebration with friends and family to welcome her to the clan.

Which reminds me – LV is the new blog-name for Gracie.  And Peanut (expected in October) will henceforth be called Eli until s/he is born.  The reason for the changes – LV’s parents weren’t too excited about a name that wasn’t her own, and I decided to change from Peanut when we discovered that the 4H beef calf we bought was named Peanut (just too weird feeling like we’re eating our grandchild! LOL!)

But back to happenings around here.  My parents joined us on our trip this past week, and we took the opportunity to visit all of my aunts and uncles, and a number of cousins.  It was great!  One uncle recently had a major surgery, then developed a bleed that nearly cost his life.  He’s looking good and getting around really well now, but it was a scare!  With some of these folks in their 90’s and one over 100, it’s important to take every opportunity to get together as often as we can these days.

On our drive out we rode a small ferry, that crosses the river only when there’s somebody to carry over.

The approach to the ferry dock was a little rustic:

112

The ferry is pulled across in part by a guide wire:

113

And the life raft – attached to the side:

117

It was an experience!!!

As we drove through Jasper National Park, we had the pleasure of watching some animals:

125128

Baby sewing for Eli is continuing, but a pile of finished diapers, sheets and blankets was delivered:

111

The celebration for LV was of course our highlight.

Cleaning house

It’s spring and typically a time to clean house.  When I clean house, this is not what it looks like:

It’s actually a lot more like this:

In reality, I no longer do the big spring or fall cleaning that I used to do.  I took a lesson from my mother, who cleans one room every month (now lives in a very small place so one a month gets her through her whole house twice a year).  I need to do one or two rooms a month to get through it all twice a year, but that’s okay as long as I don’t pair up the kitchen with any other room LOL!

I’m also a bit of a spot cleaner – I see a spot (cupboard, drawer, closet) that needs cleaning or organizing and clean it on the spot.  Which usually leads to cleaning another cupboard/drawer/closet or two or three, mostly because something has been put in the wrong spot, and when I move it to the right spot…..well you can probably guess how that goes!

A couple of days ago, I opened the drawers underneath our day bed in the spare room 025to look for some beads for a craft project; discovered things I’d completely forgotten I had, things that had been ‘put’ just to put somewhere, things that I used once and have no idea why I kept them, things that I have no idea what they could ever, ever have been used for, just stuff….so the cleaning began.  And the result:026

All my needlecraft, bead, and ribbon supplies are in the right-hand drawer; and painting supplies, tools, glues and such-like are in the left-hand drawer.  (The third drawer is actually for gift-wrapping supplies, and gets cleaned out every time I need to find a gift bag or wrapping paper).  If you look at the top picture again you’ll see a model ship that Grizz started too many years ago to count, and it got tucked away and somehow never came out again.  Well, it’s out now – here’s hoping he’ll get back to it.

In this same cleaning mood, I decided it was time to clean up the computer somewhat, specifically Blogger.  I’ve been noticing that I only hear from about 6-8 blogger friends on a regular basis, and that I’ve been feeling completely bogged down with trying to keep up with all the bloggers that I’ve been following.  So I started to check it out, and chuck it out.  From following something over 150 blogs, I’m down to 37.  Now that’s manageable.

Happy de-cluttering!                     Blessings, Peg

Ferry ‘Cross the

Mercy Arrow

Lakes, that is!

On this trip we took two ferry rides, both of them across the Arrow Lakes.

First from west to east, from Fauquier (‘fo-key-ay’) to Needles.  There is nothing but a rest stop at each of these ferry docks, if you can call them docks, and they’re each about 50 km from the nearest center.  The ride at this crossing is only about 10 minutes, on a cable-pulled ferry that only holds a dozen or so vehicles.110.Fauguier to Needles ferry111

114114

A few days later, from east to west, from Galena Bay to Shelter Bay.  At Galena Bay there’s construction happening, and not even a rest stop.  At Shelter Bay, the road is obviously newly paved and possibly widened, and there’s a parking lot and a small coffee stand.  Again, the docks aren’t much to speak of, and each is about 50 km from the nearest center.  This second crossing was about 25 minutes on a motorized ferry that unloaded 5 or 6 semi-rigs, a few RVs and 20 or so cars/pickup trucks.011015

These ferries are an absolute necessity on Highway 23 to serve the communities between Revelstoke on the north and Castlegar on the south, and to connect Hwy 23 going south from Revelstoke with Hwy 6 going west toward Vernon and Kelowna.

Columbiarivermap

But there is an interesting history behind these ferry routes that are relatively new additions to the highway system in BC.  The Arrow Lakes, Upper and Lower, essentially a widening of the Columbia River, were formed because of the dams built on the Columbia River as a result of a treaty between Canada and the US for development of hydro power for both countries.  In the 1960’s, these dams flooded much of the valley along this stretch of the Columbia River in south eastern BC, forming the lakes as a result.  But it was at great cost to the lives of the people here.  Much arable land was sacrificed, along with the homes and livelihoods of hundreds of people.  The people were compensated for their houses and lands, at least for the ‘real’ price, and were relocated.  But the social, economical, psychological price could not be compensated as they were uprooted from their homes and way of life.

This is all now remote, and what we’re left with is a system of hydro power that has served our province well for several decades – as well as beautiful lakes amid the mountains that serve practically as well as yield much recreation and enjoyment.

Happy river travels!              Blessings, Peg

We’re Home

Sometimes it feels almost like we haven’t been away, as coming home, we’re plunged right back into the regular busyness of life.

But first, a couple more photos to share.

As we left Bar U Ranch a few days ago, we drove a portion of the Cowboy Trail:095

Apparently named because it winds its way through much of Alberta’s ranchlands:

This isn’t the first time we’ve driven parts of this route.  And not the first time that we’ve seen this:

097

098

Either cowboys don’t wear cowboy hats anymore, or they so like their cowboy hats that other caps only get to top fence posts!

But the views of the prairies with the mountain backdrop – breathtaking:

099

And then a few days later, we headed west again, and once again stopped just to enjoy the mountains as they got closer:154

As much as we enjoy our road trips, there’s a certain risk in heading out there and we have to stay alert for what other drivers may decide to do.  Over and over again we see drivers passing at risky times, cutting off other drivers, ignoring rules of the road – and then we saw this:155

This wasn’t a ‘new’ accident, and there was no evidence of people needing help, but it’s truly a worry on these roads as you can never know what’s around the corner.  Hopefully this trucker came out of this okay!

Since we arrived home 2 1/2 days ago, we’ve hardly stopped.  First there’s the job of emptying and cleaning the trailer, opening up the house again, getting laundry done…..

Then on Saturday morning we joined our DS-K as he opened the door to his new home for the first time:150

He knew what we’d find inside, at least some of it, but we didn’t.  This was a bank foreclosure, and the previous owners weren’t the cleanest.  It was a shock to pull out the fridge and stove and washer.  First task – pull out all the carpets.  Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for her) DDIL-M was unable to be there for this as she’s back at school in Edmonton for her last year.

Sunday we returned to help continue the job of making this house live-able.  It was determined that the stove and dishwasher were not keepers, and they were sitting in the carport when a junkman just happened to drive by.  He took the appliances and a few other small bits of metal, and will return to get the freezer (really, really not useable).  How handy was that?!

There’s a lot of work ahead, and after a morning appointment, we’ll go back again to give some more help.  There’s plumbing and electrical to address, as well as paint and then replace flooring.  First up – make the kitchen and bathrooms use-able, clean up the living room and one bedroom.  Once that’s done, K can move in and they can work on the rest of it one step at a time.  A couple of positives: the roof is good for another 20-25 years, and most of the windows are newer thermo-pane.  Actually once it’s cleaned up, mostly esthetics will make this home very desirable.

So, there’s no just sitting around for us – gotta get busy!!!!

Happy busy times!                          Blessings, Peg

Wednesday’s Words and Hodgepodge

It’s that time of the week again.  If you want to join in or just read other Hodgepodge posts, click the link on my right-hand sidebar.

1. What lesson has failure taught you?

Mostly I think I’ve learned (sometimes not so well) that God is in charge, that He has a plan, that I need to leave it all in His hands.

2. What decision are you glad you made?

Only one?  Probably the best decision of my life was the choice to follow Jesus Christ – since then I have always been aware that if a door closes, He will open a window.

3. I've been a little bit surprised to see fully lit and decorated Christmas trees popping up for the past several weeks in friend's Instagram feeds. So tell the truth-is your tree up and decorated, and if so when did that happen? If not when will you be decking the halls?

Our tree is NOT up.  As much as I love Christmas and the decorations, I find that I get tired of them after a few weeks.  We always wait until First Advent to put up the Advent wreath, and then Dec. 1 to decorate the rest of the house.  This year, these happen to be the same day.  Our decorations stay up until Jan. 6, a Lutheran tradition from my mother-in-law, honoring the arrival of the Magi to the stable, and acknowledging the 12 days o Christmas.

4. Solitaire-poker-rummy-hearts-go fish-Old Maid...which game of cards would you most want to join?

Rummy!  We played it by the hour with my family and friends when I was growing up.  Now we play Pinochle with friends on a regular basis.  So much fun gathering around a table and playing a friendly game!

5. This question comes to you courtesy of a Facebook friend, who once upon a time had a blog...When you're feeling stressed do you snack a lot or are you more the 'can't eat' type?

I tend to eat – a really bad habit!

6. Have you ever reviewed a product or service online?  Was your review favorable or less than favorable?

I’ve done several, mostly when I’ve used an online service.  Sometimes favorable, sometimes not – depends on if my needs are met.  Not sure that anybody actually listens to these things though, because nothing seems to change, despite hearing others that agree with my thoughts.  Oh, well!

7. What was the best conversation you had yesterday?

At a strata meeting, we had a general conversation about our strata and our finances and future.  Lots of good news, and great camaraderie, even when some disagreed.  It was actually very pleasant.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

‘Nuff said!

Happy day!                  Blessings, Peg

Sewing for Fun

When we got back from our trip, my sewing machine was ready and waiting to be picked up from the LQS where it had gone for its annual tune-up.  I could hardly wait to get back to creating.

First task was to make a cover/stand for the new iPad that our kids had given us:DSCN1074DSCN1072

The pattern is by the Inspired Wren, free on Craftsy.  I did make some changes – instead of a button, I put in an elastic loop on the flap.  Then I made the end of the flap narrower, and added a couple of pieces of Velcro to it and on the front of the cover, so that when the iPad is propped up, the flap angle won’t slip.

Then I started to tackle my scraps bin.  I tend to cut scraps into 2 1/2” strips, which will lend to 2 1/2” squares for future projects.  This seems to be the most common size of strips and squares that I use.

First project up, a Jelly Roll 1600, quilt top done in just a few hours:002

Now I have strips and other bits laid out, trying to decide what I want to do next:001

When we were cleaning out the truck after our trip and before lending it to DS-K for use in getting his house cleaned up, I came across a bag that didn’t look familiar.  Grizz looked at it and said he had no idea what was in it, and then we checked it out.  Well, it was a Christmas gift for me that he had bought when we were in Sisters, OR a couple of months ago.  He’d tucked it away, and then completely forgot about it.  So, for the winter ahead, I have something to keep me occupied for a few days anyway:DSCN1071

Looking forward to that one!

Happy sewing and quilting                                 Blessings, Peg

The 12 Days of Christmas

Who of us hasn’t heard and/or sang the song of the 12 Days of Christmas?  It’s one of those traditional songs and is heard throughout the season.

I was given a jigsaw puzzle of the 12 Days of Christmas for my birthday, and finished it a little before Christmas:

As I looked at the symbols on the picture, I recalled once being told there was Christian symbolism to the song, so I did a search.  Yes, symbolism has been applied to the song, but whether or not the origins lie in the symbolism, or the symbolism followed the creation of the song is unclear.  Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading about this, and wanted to share it:

On the 1st day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

Day 1, Christmas Day, December 25 A Partridge in a Pear Tree
The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, whose birthday we celebrate on December 25, the first day of Christmas. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge that feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless nestlings, recalling the expression of Christ's sadness over the fate of Jerusalem: "Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How often would I have sheltered you under my wings, as a hen does her chicks, but you would not have it so . . . ." (Luke 13:34)

On the 2nd day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

Day 2, December 26 Two Turtle Doves

Day 5, December 29 Five Gold Rings
The first Five Books of the Old Testament, known as the Torah or the Pentateuch: 1) Genesis, 2) Exodus, 3) Leviticus, 4) Numbers, and 5) Deuteronomy, which gives the history of humanity's sinful failure and God's response of grace in the creation of a people to be a light to the world.

On the 6th day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

He descended into hell [the grave]. 5) On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 6) He will come again to judge the living and the dead. 7) I believe in the Holy Spirit, 8) the holy catholic Church, 9) the communion of saints, 10) the forgiveness of sins, 11) the resurrection of the body, 12) and life everlasting.

Now that Christmas is over, the gifts have all been given and opened, and the turkey leftovers are being eaten, we won’t be hearing this song again.  But the 12 Days of Christmas only begin on December 26, ending on January 6 which is the day we celebrate the arrival of the Magi to honor the birth of the long-awaited Messiah.  In our home, the Christmas tree stays standing until January 6, one of the traditions of Grizz’ mother’s family and her church up-bringing that we still keep.  And we remember the season of giving, the reason for the celebrations, the love of God in sending His Son, the gift that lasts all year!

Happy 12 Days of Christmas!        Blessings, Peg
