The subject of the day is
MUSIC.
It is one of those things in life I simply cannot function without.
Like air.
I turn it on first thing in the morning, before I make breakfast, before I'm even awake, and then I can start my day. And it stays on all day long. And I listen to everything. We have a very eclectic collection on our itunes, as well as all the Pandora stations we love, and the wide and varying cds we have collected over twenty years or so.
But I realized something yesterday.... I admit that my strongest addiction is Broadway musicals, and I listen to them more than anything else, but lately I've been obsessed with one song in particular, thanks to a blogging friend who introduced me to it A WHOLE MONTH AGO and now I can't listen to anything else!!!
WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH ME??!!!
Absoloooootely nothing!
There are worse things I could listen to....
But it also occurred to me that I've got a whole music mood thing going on. Actually, it occurred to my husband. He has a whole theory about me and my music - when he comes home from work and I've got the show tunes blaring, it means I had a good day. If it's Celtic Women or Josh Groban or any other easy listening stuff, then I've had a stressful day and it's entirely likely that I'm suffering from a headache. OR, if it's something really obscure, like They Might Be Giants or ABBA or something from our varied Kid's collection, chances are pretty high that Sue had a better than good day, and she's feelin' pretty loopy.
(And if it's Miley Cyrus, then it's a pretty good indication that the kids have wrapped me up in duct tape and hidden me in the crawl space.)
But, when all is said and done, there is one musical that I always turn to whenever I'm feeling sad or melancholy or even a little hormonal that always touches me to the point of tears. A year ago or so, a friend of mine told me about the Broadway Musical version of "The Secret Garden" which she had seen back in high school in the early 90's. I had heard about it, but never had seen it and didn't recognize the music from it or anything. She loaned me a copy of her CD, and I almost didn't return it! The story was familiar, and it was easy to see how the songs fit the story because of the narrative that runs through the music, but let me tell you, I was hooked! The music is so hauntingly beautiful.... and I can just imagine the stage set and what the costumes would look like... and I checked amazon.com and ebay and all those websites that have everything for sale, but nobody ever made a film version of the musical.
And I was sad.
Until today!
Would you believe, I finally found a clip on youtube? Why didn't I go there first?
So here's a glimpse of my new favorite musical. I hope you enjoy it.
And hey, I just saw my essay on Mormon Mommy Blogs! You may recognize it as a condensed form of a previous post, but go check it out anyway!

Wow! I wonder if I really am the first comment...that hardly ever happens. :)
I've never seen the musical "The Secret Garden" but I enjoyed the movie and the book. Thanks for sharing the video clip!
Oh yeah, I also wanted to say...How true that music can affect our moods, and our moods can affect our choices in music too. Interesting.
I'm sorry...Abba is obscure?! In what world? Abba is timeless---or maybe I just love it (them?) with all my heart and soul and will never tire of them. Maybe.
Barb, you're absolutely right. I didn't mean any offense whatsoever -- but if all that lovely 70's disco music is making a permanent comeback, then I better get out my go-go's and see if I can squeeze back into my floral print corduroy bell bottoms! (They were my favorite pants in third grade!)
It's beautiful! I had never heard of it! I will have to remember to look for it!
p.s. What is Mormon Mommy Blogs?
great stuff... I didn't know anybody else listened to They Might Be Giants still :)
and believe it or not I first learned about the Pandora thing about 30 seconds before opening your blog... asked eldest son what the heck he was messing with when I wanted to blog... see, kids are good for something sometimes :)
Saw "Secret Garden" on Broadway--it was amazing!
I love music, but unfortunately have zero music collection, no ipod, and no playlist. Yet I have more songs running around in my brain than ten average people put together! Sometimes I think my kids need to hear a little of my life through music...maybe this is my call to action.
I just want to say Pandora is awesome. It's one of those rare great ideas that my husband told me about first. Usually I know the good stuff. :)
I love Broadway, too. I find myself listening to EVITA over and over. Also loved BOMBAY DREAMS.
For the past couple of days, though, I have been listening to BIG IN JAPAN by Alphaville. Now, what kind of mood does that put me in?
Broadway has produced some of the BEST music. I have a lot of favorites. At the moment the one I'm listening to the most? I love Wicked and it's getting a lot of airtime in my truck.
Thanks for stopping by - I had completely forgotten about the Spinach Salad. I'm really glad you reminded me!
You have opened up my world to a whole new genre of music! Thanks for sharing!
